China has a long-standing tradition of moon worship. The Book of Rites records: “The Son of Heaven worships the sun in spring and the moon in autumn.” “Evening Moon” refers to moon worship. Every Mid-Autumn night, people set up large incense tables, offering mooncakes and seasonal fruits like watermelon, apples, plums, and grapes to the Moon Deity, praying for peace and happiness.
Mooncakes were initially used as offerings to the Moon Deity. Later, people gradually combined moon gazing with tasting mooncakes, making them a symbol of family reunion. Mooncakes are also exchanged as gifts among relatives and friends to strengthen bonds.
Beyond these common practices, across China’s vast and diverse regions, many unique local customs exist. For instance, people in Zhejiang enjoy watching the tidal bore during Mid-Autumn, residents of Nanjing must eat the local delicacy Osmanthus Duck, and ethnic groups like the Miao have the tradition of "Moon Dancing".
